Energy Consumption by Sector
Energy Consumption by Sector, Source: EIA 2006 Data

Housing is a major consumer of energy, accounting for more than 20 percent of the total energy used in the United States. And energy consumption for the housing sector is projected to increase more than 19% over the next two decades due to demographic trends in the market and housing preferences, according to the US EIA. If it continues on its current consumption path, New York will be no exception to this increase.  In fact, from 1998 to 2006, NY registered a 20% increase in residential electricity use per person.  Programs like the NYSERDA HPRDC are working to reverse this trend by working with home builders to raise the bar on energy efficiency.  Through thoughtful design and selection of building and mechanical systems, New Yorkers can enjoy housing that’s more comfortable, cost effective, and environmentally friendly.

The federal government also offers a series of tax incentives for installing renewable energy and energy efficienct systems into your home. Click on this link to read a brief overview on the types of incentives being offered.
