Stewart Construction Inc. is a second-generation, family-owned and operated business. The Stewart family has been building and remodeling homes in the Capital Region for 40 years. The company is owned by Todd Stewart, who lives with his wife and three children in Vienna Heights, a Stewart subdivision built in the late 1990’s. Stewart Construction is a small-volume company, which means they take a very hands-on approach to projects and pride themselves on personal service and customer satisfaction. Stewart’s building philosophy is simple: build a product that exceeds our client’s expectations using only quality products and experienced craftsmen.
Stewart Construction’s typical home has a HERS of 86.2. In the basement they install R-11 cavity insulation inside wood framed walls. The above grade wall cavities have R-19 insulation, while the walls are framed with wood 2x6s spaced at 16 inches on-center. The NYSERDA Challenge home will be slightly over 2,100 square feet and has a project HERS of 91.8.
STEWART'S HIGH PERFORMANCE HOME
Above is a picture of the Stewart home tightly wrapped in a weather barrier, waiting for siding. Below is a picture of an insulated window header. When building an energy efficient home small details, like insulating window headers, are extremely important. The better a home is sealed and insulated the smaller, more efficient a heating and cooling system can be, thereby reducing energy use and costs.
After the window header was installed, the entire wall cavity was filled with expanding spray foam insulation. Notice how the spray foam surrounds both sides of the duct work.
